BookSpired Film Festival – New Youth Festival for 2022

As Scotland’s National Book Town, Wigtown has developed a distinct film festival that centres on the portrayal and influence of literature in film.

Which came first, the book or the film? Well in reality, the book, but often the discussion amongst audiences and critics is which was better the book or the film?

Whilst all film is not derived from books, many books have influenced screen writers and directors, and a film festival that focusses on not just the translation of literature into film, but also the influence of each medium on the other will provide a unique vantage point. This festival explores all forms of writing and how they lead to world class films and documentaries that entertain, inform and inspire us all.

Covid-19 has scuppered our plans for 2020 and then 2021 caused a few problems too but………

2022 sees the launch of our new Bookspired Youth Film Festival.

Bookspired Youth Film Festival – save the dates – Thursday 27th January to Sunday 30th January 2022

With the support of the Holywood Trust we have brought together a team of young people to create our new festival. The group have been meeting weekly over the past three months to plan and programme the festival and for their first festival have chosen the theme of Musicals. The festival will screen 8 films in locations across the Machars, including Whithorn, Monreith, Sorbie, Wigtown and Newton Stewart.

With further support from the DGUnlimited Together Again fund we have been able to commission local filmaker Ben Please to create a new short film during the festival that captures life in the Machars. The finished short film will be premiered at the end of the festival. Ben will also deliver a workshop with Tabi Mudaliar with around 50 young people to explore careers in the film industry and try their hand at Foley work, with the results screened alongside Ben’s Festival piece.

We will publish updates and information here and on our Facebook Pages @DriftwoodMovies and @BookSpired
